Barcelona could be dropped out of Copa del Rey as Levante file official complaint

Levante have made an official complaint to the Spanish FA as they seek to have Barcelona expelled from the Copa del Rey.

The Blaugrana claimed victory in their last 16 tie on Thursday night, winning 3-0 in the second leg to secure a 4-2 aggregate victory.

But that clash was somewhat overshadowed by the news that Barca played an ineligible player - B team defender Chumi - during the first leg in Valencia.

Chumi, 19, started that game, but it has since been claimed he should have been ineligible as Federation rules state that a suspended player cannot play for the senior team until he has completed a sanction.

The youngster earned a fifth yellow card for third-tier Barca B in a game against Castellon on January 6, which its claimed should have meant him missing the Levante fixture.

Barca have been relaxed about the issue. Chumi missed the B-team fixture with Alcoyano on January 13, and with Barca insisting that they have followed the rules by not playing him then.

The Catalans argued that they believed the suspension was only valid for league games, a posture later denied by the RFEF.

However, following Thursday's loss, Levante have now raised their complaint with the Spanish federation.

"Levante have presented a complaint this morning to the Spanish FA regarding the illegal participation of a Barcelona player in the first leg of the Copa del Rey last 16 tie," they stated on Twitter .
